Taste Organic Otago

Taste Organic Otago – 15th to 31st October

We are thrilled to launch a brand-new festival to celebrate Organics in Otago. We are so passionate about organic food at Taste Nature that we have created our own wine and food festival called – Taste Organic Otago.

Commencing on Friday 15th October, and running through till Sunday 31st October.

We have invited key Central Otago wineries to collaborate with Dunedin and Central Otago restaurants to create an exclusive wine and food match. For the festival period, each restaurant will offer a menu dish that comprises of organic ingredients to be matched to an organic wine from some of New Zealand’s top certified organic wineries in Central Otago.

Our key theme for this festival is to raise awareness for consumers on Regenerative Organics and how it can minimise the effects of Climate Change. Regenerative agriculture practices hit at the heart of some of our biggest environmental challenges – restoring the quality of our waterways, increasing carbon sequestration in our soils, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving food quality and safety, and allowing healthy ecosystems to flourish. Improved profitability in farming is now possible because of improved stewardship of our land and water. We want our suppliers and consumers to help shift Aotearoa to a regenerative economy.

Now is the time for our society to think very seriously about how and where our food comes from. Everyone one of us has the potential to change, by supporting organic regenerative we are making a start on this journey together.

To be involved in Taste Organic Otago, simply book with your favourite restaurants below and request your organic wine and food match dinner.

Moiety Restaurant

We are a small owner – operator restaurant offering a five course menu, located in Dunedin’s historic Warehouse Precinct.

Our menu constantly evolves as we are guided by local produce where possible.

Our aim is to give you a full dining experience, rather than simply feeding you.

Using Organics goes hand in hand with our aim of telling a Dunedin and New Zealand food story. Being able to work with our local organic producers to bring different and uncommon varieties to the menu allow us to share a time and place with customers while meeting business goals around sustainability.

Using organic produce gives us the cleanest starting point with the most constant results across our range of in house pickles and ferments. Our wine list also represents a similar approach of letting the product tell a story of time & place/terrior with limited amounts of interference.

Our aim is to use local, organic produce as much as possible. This approach, along with our style of serving, helps reduce food waste in our restaurant and pollution for the planet.

We love to provide our guests with an experience, the moment they sit down at their table. Our ever-changing “trust the chef” menu at dinner time allows guests to submerge into our unique flavour combinations.

Carrick Restaurant Central Otago

Our philosophy at Carrick is that we are guardians of our land and look to continuous improvement of our soils and site through certified organic management, developing biodiversity, and looking after the people who look after our site.

Wine is our expression of our place and we have pursued organics as a path where this can best be reflected. We have been farming organically since 2008 because we believe that what goes into our soils effects the water we are surrounded by, which in turn effects our community.

Endeavouring to create biodiversity and sustainability on our site, we have a native plant nursery, only use natural yeasts in our fermentations, grow herbs and vegetables on-site for our restaurant, plan vineyard cover crops, compost organic materials, and recycle or reuse packaging and waste.

Sherwood Queenstown

Sherwood is a Community Hotel & Restaurant where people and place are at the heart of what we do….if we do what’s best for them, it’s best for everyone.

Our dramatic landscapes and pristine environment are the things that draw us all to Queenstown and we feel that a simple respect for nature lies at the heart of any sustainable practice. As a business that depends on nature, we are determined that with a little thought and care we can leave this place in better shape than when we found it.

One day we’d love to say the only thing that enters and leaves Sherwood is people. We’ve got a way to go, but our Bar is currently operating under zero-waste principles with over 60% of our Natural wines bottled in house, while in the kitchen, 100% of our organic waste is composted and returned to the kitchen garden to grow more food.

Wine & Food Match:

We work closely with local producers to showcase the best, local, natural wines that we can. Aurum is one of our favourites and we have decided to match their delicious, rich and vivacious Pinot Gris Rose with our Pickled Diamond Surf clams, escabeche and tarragon dish.

This lush wine cuts through the acidity of the escabeche and leaves a delicious fullness in the mouth with a hint of sweetness.

Organics is the defining philosophy of our vineyard management. We believe we have a moral obligation to preserve our rural environment and a continued focus on good environmental management is positive not only from a sustainability and good business point of view but will also help us create better wines.

Two Paddocks Winery

In the Fine Wine & Cheering Up Business Since 1993

Established in 1993 by itinerant actor Sam Neill, initially the sole aim was to share ethereal Pinot Noir moments with loved ones. Sam is now the only producer to own land in the three main valleys of Central Otago – Gibbston, Cromwell (Bannockburn) and Alexandra – all are certified organic.

Philosophically we are not at all keen about agrichemicals and the rather regrettable industrial aspect of wine production we see elsewhere. Admittedly we are rather fortunate in some ways in that the Central Otago is well favoured towards organics — the low humidity for instance means we are seldom challenged by fungi in the way some other regions might be. But we are, without being wild-eyed about all this, believers in a natural and healthy environment for our vines, for our staff and for you, the imbibing client. Soil health is essential as well.

Mount Edward Winery

Our heart is about making wines that are delicious, textural, subtle, moreish wines. To keep the head happy we grow unique and small batch wines from single vineyard sites, Pinot Noir to Gamay, Chardonnay to Chenin and much more.

Traditional winemaking, a healthy regard to science, all without a rulebook telling us what to do or how to look. The less you do the better the wine is a truism that guides us via minimal intervention such as no fining, filtration, aids or additives.

Our motto, Grow your Own Way, is with a care to all around you, surround yourself with people who think the same and enjoy yourselves.

Rippon Winery

5 cows, 4 full-time dogs, bees, occasional chickens, assorted family members and a tight-knit, top notch team working on and around the farm: this is Rippon.

Rippon is also a unique and distinct parcel of land on the shores of Lake Wanaka, Central Otago which, for over one hundred years, has been cared for and farmed by successive generations of the Mills family. Pioneers in the Central Otago wine industry, Rippon was among the very first in recent times to plant vines with the oldest blocks dating back to 1982.

Rippon is farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles and focus for all who work and live here is to do justice to this very special piece of land, growing wines that speak clearly of the place they call home.

Peregrine Winery

Organic farming is fundamental to every aspect of Peregrine Estate, with a holistic approach that integrates crop and livestock farming to vineyard management.  The talented estate farming team are as adept at nurturing vines, as they are developing land, or working with crops and livestock.

The Peregrine Estate has been farmed organically since 2009 when Lindsay McLachlan decided to convert the entire property to an organic farming regime. Our motivation is to farm the Estate using management practices that not only enhances the land for future generations but provides healthy conditions for our people who work on the land.   Our management approach focuses on nurturing healthy, living soils so that the vines and other crops we farm can grow in a balanced and healthy manner. This is a prevention methodology rather than providing the soil or vines with a cure when they become unhealthy.

We believe that our organic farming approach provides the highest quality fruit from our Estate.

We want to show that you can look after the land and ensure it is in better shape for the next generation while making great wine at the same time.

An event that encapsulates our values as a business – celebrating local business, food producers, all in an effort to make greater change.
