Taste Organic Otago – 15th to 31st October

We are thrilled to launch a brand-new festival to celebrate Organics in Otago. We are so passionate about organic food at Taste Nature that we have created our own wine and food festival called – Taste Organic Otago.

 

Commencing on Friday 15th October, and running through till Sunday 31st October.

 

We have invited key Central Otago wineries to collaborate with Dunedin and Central Otago restaurants to create an exclusive wine and food match. For the festival period, each restaurant will offer a menu dish that comprises of organic ingredients to be matched to an organic wine from some of New Zealand’s top certified organic wineries in Central Otago.

 

Our key theme for this festival is to raise awareness for consumers on Regenerative Organics and how it can minimise the effects of Climate Change. Regenerative agriculture practices hit at the heart of some of our biggest environmental challenges – restoring the quality of our waterways, increasing carbon sequestration in our soils, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving food quality and safety, and allowing healthy ecosystems to flourish. Improved profitability in farming is now possible because of improved stewardship of our land and water. We want our suppliers and consumers to help shift Aotearoa to a regenerative economy.

 

 

Now is the time for our society to think very seriously about how and where our food comes from. Everyone one of us has the potential to change, by supporting organic regenerative we are making a start on this journey together.

At tītī, we look to the ocean and land that surrounds us to find inspiration for our cuisine. Our menus evolve gradually within each season, frequently changing to celebrate produce at their peak. Carrick Restaurant Central Otago

 

 

Our philosophy at Carrick is that we are guardians of our land and look to continuous improvement of our soils and site through certified organic management, developing biodiversity, and looking after the people who look after our site.

 

Wine is our expression of our place and we have pursued organics as a path where this can best be reflected. We have been farming organically since 2008 because we believe that what goes into our soils effects the water we are surrounded by, which in turn effects our community.

 

Endeavouring to create biodiversity and sustainability on our site, we have a native plant nursery, only use natural yeasts in our fermentations, grow herbs and vegetables on-site for our restaurant, plan vineyard cover crops, compost organic materials, and recycle or reuse packaging and waste.

Two Paddocks Winery

Established in 1993 by itinerant actor Sam Neill, initially the sole aim was to share ethereal Pinot Noir moments with loved ones. Sam is now the only producer to own land in the three main valleys of Central Otago – Gibbston, Cromwell (Bannockburn) and Alexandra – all are certified organic.

 

Philosophically we are not at all keen about agrichemicals and the rather regrettable industrial aspect of wine production we see elsewhere. Admittedly we are rather fortunate in some ways in that the Central Otago is well favoured towards organics — the low humidity for instance means we are seldom challenged by fungi in the way some other regions might be. But we are, without being wild-eyed about all this, believers in a natural and healthy environment for our vines, for our staff and for you, the imbibing client. Soil health is essential as well.

Organic farming is fundamental to every aspect of Peregrine Estate, with a holistic approach that integrates crop and livestock farming to vineyard management.  The talented estate farming team are as adept at nurturing vines, as they are developing land, or working with crops and livestock.

The Peregrine Estate has been farmed organically since 2009 when Lindsay McLachlan decided to convert the entire property to an organic farming regime. Our motivation is to farm the Estate using management practices that not only enhances the land for future generations but provides healthy conditions for our people who work on the land.   Our management approach focuses on nurturing healthy, living soils so that the vines and other crops we farm can grow in a balanced and healthy manner. This is a prevention methodology rather than providing the soil or vines with a cure when they become unhealthy.
