The Office

The behind the scenes work at Taste Nature is as important as our front of house. Danielle ensures that all our suppliers are paid on time and that we meet all the necessary regulations for our Food & Health Safety and BioGro certification requirements. Not the most glamorous job, but a vital one!

Our History

Taste Nature has a long and interesting history as Dunedin’s organic store. Started by Jim O’Gorman in 1992 as Silverpeaks Bay Products Ltd, it occupied several sites around town in the old church on Dundas St and several sites in Moray Place.

It eventually settled at 59 Moray Place under a new structure of a combined suppliers and consumers group formed to help it get through some challenging times. John Gadd and Helen Davidson were instrumental in keeping Taste Nature operating and viable during this period.

Having been a small scale local grower for Taste Nature, Mark & Rayna Dickson bought the business in 2003 and have taken it through several growth spurts (and pains) since then. In 2009 they moved to new premises in the old Bing Harris Building in lower High St. This was assisted by their loyal customers and friends with their wheelbarrows on moving day. The new premises were beneficial for the growth of the business enabling an expansion of stock and development of products produced in the kitchen for the store. The business has grown over the years with Mark’s work in finding many small certified organic produce growers who are prepared and able to regularly supply the store and with many more artisan and organic products becoming available.

The addition of the self-serve eatery bar in 2011 enabled Mark & Rayna to complete the cycle from their garden to their customers plate. In 2013, they celebrated their 10th anniversary with a small gathering of customers and friends to give thanks for what had been achieved.

As they continue nurturing the business, Mark & Rayna are as passionate as ever about ensuring the ongoing availability and high quality of organic food in the Otago region. They are committed to developing a business model to sustain Taste Nature for the future and are enjoying the current rejuvenation of the historic precinct in Central Dunedin and the increasing customers this brings to the area.
