Our gardening philosophy
The Taste Nature Garden is designed around permaculture principles and has a wide range of organic and biodynamic practices now well established – crop rotation and green cropping, compost making, herbal leys throughout orchards and chicken rotations throughout the gardens. We follow organic production practices and standards.
What we grow
We grow salad greens, kale, beet and culinary herbs for Taste Nature and some fabulous root vegetables because of our sandy river flat soil. We produce a wide range of pip fruit – Jason Ross of Habitate Nursery has over 35 varieties of heritage fruit trees on the property to provide stock for his nursery. Any excess produce is sold on the verandah of the old store in the heart of Waitati.
Farm visits, workshops and volunteers
The collaboration with Habitate Nursery has provided a wonderful community resource over many years, fielding an array of workshops, open days, field trips, training programmes and many opportunities for Wwoofing and volunteers. ‘Willing Wednesdays’ include a communal lunch!
